Low carb life – week 2

I didn’t think it was possible to daydream about porridge, but this week has proved me wrong. I would kill for one of those right now.

Yes, the carb cravings have set in. Seeing a woman eating grapes on my way home yesterday was enough to make my body scream. It’s a bizarre feeling.

Another strange thing is my lack of hunger. This was one of the alleged benefits of the diet that I was looking forward to the most, and I can confirm that it is indeed a great benefit. It’s a strange feeling though – my hunger feelings, that are normally about as predictable as a game of football between Sweden and Portugal, are more or less gone. I don’t feel a need to have that mid-morning snack anymore, and I don’t come home from work feeling like I need dinner on the table NOW.

I do however still snack to keep myself going (and because, well, I like eating), and my snacking habit is probably the one thing that has changed the least since starting the diet. On a normal day I tend to have nuts and raisins for a snack; now I have nuts and cheese cubes, coconut chips or jerky.

Breakfast, on the other hand, is the meal I struggle with the most. I am not a big breakfast person to begin with, and I struggle to wolf down heavy foods full of fat and protein first thing in the morning. Luckily, someone invented the smoothie. A smoothie with almond milk, Skyr, avocado, spinach, whey protein and a handful of berries is perfectly palatable, and it keeps me full for hours.

But I am not going to lie – I am secretly counting down the days until I can sit down at the breakfast table with a warm, comforting bowl of porridge again. 17 days to go…
